Daithí Releases ‘Erase It’ Remix ahead of Longitude Performance [Interview]

16 July 2015
We recently got together with Irish producer Daithí to talk about his new remix of I’m Your Vinyl’s track ‘Erase It’. Daithí also talks us through how he picks specific tracks to remix and how he now works with the artists to get the tracks out there, all of which helps to build good relationships between himself and the artists.

As Daithí is all set to play Longitude he also gives us his top 5 acts to see at this years Longitude Festival and what we can expect from his set this Saturday.

WWD: Good afternoon Daithí, thanks for making the time in your busy schedule to chat with us  today. How are things?

Hey man! Pretty good, summer Galway is the best Galway, it’s alive over here.

WWD: You have been very busy of late in producing some top quality remixes like ‘Dust’ from Tell No Foxx, which may I say was an unbelievable remix, but you have another remix coming
out called ‘Erase It‘, a track that has been given to you by the very talented I’m Your Vinyl.
Talk us through the track?

Thanks very much! The original is a pop tune with an old style feel, so I wanted to go the other way with the remix, and make it fairly modern. I think it naturally got a summer vibe because I’m currently on the festival circuit.

WWD: When you are looking to do remixes of a band or individuals track, what is it you look for
that makes you choose the tracks you do?

It was the vocal that really made me jump at the chance to make this remix. Rhythmic punchy choruses are perfect for my style of music, something you can sing along too easily while bouncing around. After that chord structures are really important, a simple change of a guitar to organ playing the chords can really get inspiration moving.

WWD: What has been the reaction from I’m Your Vinyl in relation to your remix of their ‘Erase It’ track and how do you think your fans will react to it when they hear the full length version?

They really liked it, which is good ha. Ken is quite an experienced producer, so it was good to get his feedback. With this track and the Tell No Foxx mix I’ve started to take more ownership in the remixes, I was getting sick of just handing over remixes and then just being done with them. I work more with the acts to get the remixes out there, and in turn it helps develop a good friendship between the acts and I. I think my fans will like the track, it continues the development of my style, keeping the pop elements and getting a little more developed with the production.

WWD: Besides the release of the remix, we are all excited for Longitude this weekend but more
importantly you are set to perform on the Saturday, are you excited?

I can’t wait, it’s going to be a good one. I’m going to be performing my new live show, which is an improv based set focused on Fiddle. I have an analog Moog bass playing all the bass lines, which sounds amazing, and my fiddle is now rigged to play midi notes, so I can play a note on the fiddle and a synth sound will come out of the speakers. You can check out some rough and ready rehearsal videos on my Facebook.

WWD: What can your fans expect from your set at Longitude? Have you got anything special
planned that you care to tell us?

I also have a ton of guest vocalists making an appearance: Elaine Mai,  Senita, Raye and for the first time ever Sinead White, singing an as yet unreleased track. Really excited to get everyone out there, they are all incredible performers.

WWD: For those who may be living under a rock or in a bubble who are yet to hear your music,
what would you say to those who are heading to check you out?

It’s going to be full off energy. This new show is really based around how a crowd is reacting to what I’m doing, if I see people getting into a certain part I can develop that part more and more, it’s been going down really well. I played Body & Soul a few weeks ago and people were going nuts, I haven’t had as much fun with a live show in years.

WWD: The line-up for this years Longitude is incredible, who are you going to see and who would
be your top 5 acts for people to check out, besides yourself of course?

Kaytranada, Cashmere Cat and Danny Brown are all acts that I haven’t seen before that are must see acts. After that, people should check out my buddies Young Wonder, and then Caribou is my favourite act of all time and space and dimensions, his show never gets old.

WWD: Before we go, have you got anything in the pipeline that you would care to divulge with
us?

I’ve been spending weeks of my time in a studio here in Galway working on my next release. It’s going to be a record inspired by the west of Ireland, but not the touristy west we usually see, more what it’s like to actually live here. It’s the first record I’ve completely produced on my own and feels really personal and different. I’m excited about it, but also kind of nervous, which I think is how you should feel when writing something on your own.

WWD: Daithí, it has been a pleasure talking to you today. We wish you all the best with the
release of your new remix and for Longitude. Thanks again for joining us.

Thank you guys, and thanks for all the support.
