Munich men BAAL, both conveniently named Matthias, step up and deliver an exquisite 2 hour mix for us. Having previously premiered their recent ‘Aquila’ on Kittball with us, our readers were introduced to their production qualities. Now, we introduce you to their skills behind the decks. Tuck in to this killer mix and check out what the guys had to say when we caught up with them recently 🙂 Enjoy!
WWD : We’ll start off easy! Where are you guys right now and what have you been up to?
BAAL : We are playing Call Of Duty II Black Ops and having some beers. 😉
Did you’s get up to anything interesting over the holiday period or new year?
Well, Matthias Draexler will be in South America for a month and in July we both will move to Berlin! We hope to get a variety of new influences with this.
For people that may not know, how did the name BAAL come about? What’s it’s meaning?
It means “lord” or “owner” in hebrew and is also the name of a pagan god of fertility and storm. We chose it because it has a variety of different meanings bad, neutral and good ones.Like every human being also has bad, neutral and good aspects.
2015 was a good year for BAAL. You’re remix of Winter Son’s ‘Polar Vanquish’ on Stem Records was a very popular release here in at WWD. What were some of your 2015 highlights?
Ingenium was definitely one we thought would be one of the biggest. But due to the digital only release we fear that it got not the attention it may have deserved. Maybe we will give that track another push in 2016.
Favourite city you travelled to in 2015?
Matthias Draexler wants to visit Quito and Matthias Schüll will visit Venice! And of course due we move to Berlin – favorite city of all ;).
One place you want to add to your schedule in 2016?
UK! Almost anywhere ;). And Madrid maybe. We will see…
You recently remixed Hans Zimmer ‘Why So Serious’. Are you big movie fans?
The biggest! We watch movies a lot. Also Matthias Schuell always wanted to be a director and
already did a couple of films so this is the secondary art for us!
What’s each of yours favourite movies?
Matthias Draexler – “Forest Gump”.
Matthias Schuell: “Apocalypse Now Redux”
What’s your favourite movie score of all time?
Score from the Harry Potter movies for our hearts 😉 and the score from Kubrick’s “Shining” for our minds
One artist you’d like to remix this year and why?
Stephan Bodzin because we love to play with melodies and he got a lot of those.
What’s in the pipeline for BAAL at the moment? Do you have any nice releases or gigs upcoming ?
Well we recently had “Aquila” on Kittball Records but we will also have one release on Einmusika and another on Musica Autonomica this year. Both will be out in autumn and we are very much looking forward to! Also there will be a high energy remix for Sid Le Rock out on Suruba Records this summer.
What are your goals for BAAL in 2016?
Moving to Berlin – getting our releases done. Simple but still quite challenging.
Finally, 2 quick fire questions. Most placed track in your iTunes ever and the most played track in your recently added? 🙂
