TWR72 – When We Dip 052

When We Dip
Interviews, Podcasts, Techno
3 February 2016

TWR72 is made up of Tom Doorschodt & Roger van der Zwan and is an Amsterdam based techno duo sharing a real passion for the same sorts of sounds and showcasing them to the wider world. As such, they are a thriving act turning many heads and are pioneering their own forward-thinking approach to electronic music. Combining pulsing rhythms with a direct sense of drive, they bind both to a strong signature groove.

Their progress can be benchmarked by the strong Berghain booking that lies ahead. Later this month, for 5hrs during the event which runs between the 20th and 22nd February, the guys play the world reknowned Klubnacht. Berghain is the fulcrum which the modern techno universe revolves around and as such, we are honoured to host the guys before their appearance.

Whet the appetite for Berghain with their 60min mix and learn a bit more about the guys by reading our candid chat below. Enjoy!

WWD : Thanks for taking the time to join us guys. Where abouts are you you at the moment?
TWR72 : No problem at all, thanks for having us. We’re both in Amsterdam, the city we live in.

You guys changed your name to TWR72 in 2009. Why TWR72? Is there a meaning behind the name?

Actually, to make a long story, short. This answer has a double meaning. It is an acronym of our previous name, mostly to show the different direction we went in at that moment. We started focusing more on producing records. We’ve made a long journey (music wise) already, which brought us at a lot of cool places. But we really feel we’re at the place where we belong now.

One thing even your biggest fans might not know about TWR72? 🙂
Roger was a professional football player and Tom is a doctor.

What is both of yours favourite track in your recently added right now?

Roger: I have to say a yet unreleased track by a good friend of us, A001. Wish I made that one.
Tom: Dold – Tumult (Fisssh Remix)

You’ve an EP coming on your very own float recordings. What’s in store for us with that?

We thought it was a good idea to celebrate the 10th release on Float with a release by ourselves. It’s called ‘X’ and has 3 original tracks and features 2 remixes by Endlec, which are amazing. As you might have seen we’re trying to break some boundaries with our artwork. This time the sleeve is going to be pretty special again.

How did you find managing the label in 2015?
It was the first time we started with vinyl releases and because of the serious delays at the pressing plant we really had to step up our game with our schedule. Especially because we’re taking care of the sleeves ourselves. But at the end it’s definitely all worth it. We had some amazing remixers for the first 2 vinyl releases. Also, running the label with our friend and talented graphic designer Merijn van Velsen is a real nice experience.

Have you any artists other than yourselves lined up to feature on Float in 2016?

Yes! Besides the latest release by Tensal (just out!) and our upcoming EP ‘X’, we have 2 more vinyl releases scheduled this year. One is with a big talent we recently discovered. The last one of 2016 will be from one of our favorite producers at the moment. But we cannot drop any names yet as you never know what could happen in the meantime. Besides the vinyl releases we also do digital releases to introduce talents who need to get their music into the world. First 2 coming up are Dold, from Sweden and Deauwd from the Netherlands. There is so much talent out there nowadays. We really feel the urge to give them a solid platform at Float Records.

One Dutch producer we should keep an eye out for this year?

Without a doubt, A001.

You were recently featured on Huxley’s Rinse FM show. How did that come about?

Michael contacted us before the new year started and we were happily suprised with his request of course. Altough we’re in a slightly different genre he plays our tracks a lot which shows his diversity. And Truncate was also a previous guest on his show so at the end it definitely made sense. We actually think it’s a good thing that different genres can connect.

We’ve mentioned the EP on Float. Have you any other exciting projects in the pipeline? Live show?

We are currently working on a lot of new music and are talking with some labels. We can’t say much more we’re afraid.

Any nice gigs upcoming? I see a nice booking upcoming at Depot, Amsterdam and a return to Berghain I hear?
Yes, Depot is a new club in Amsterdam, so we don’t know what to expect, but we’re really looking forward to it playing in our hometown. It’s our debut in the Berghain so you can imagine how glad we are to play there this month. We have 5 hours to fill, so we really can create a decent vibe as we have plenty of time. We are absolutely honored!

One city you’d love to add to your schedule this year?
London is the first one which pops into mind, but we’d also love to discover Madrid for example and how the techno scene experience is there. There’s a lot of good techno coming from Spain at the moment.

What goals have you set for 2016?
To do a solid release on a solid techno label. Growing further with Float Records to create a bigger platform for the sound of techno we love. And last but not least to kill that Berghain gig.

Finally, what have you tried to create when piecing your mix together for us? Is it a different approach from the Rinse guest mix? (Any new tracks we should listen out for?)

We always play the music we want to if we were standing in a club ourselves. But the tracks we play are always different depending on the atmosphere and mood we’re in. So let’s say, the same approach with a different result.
