Rooted in the independent scene, Victor Tomasi’s artistic approach puts craftsmanship at the core, far from fleeting trends. Whether in the studio or behind the decks, he builds a coherent sonic universe, designed as much for dancing as for attentive listening.

Victor has performed both DJ sets and live shows in Parisian clubs such as Djoon, Rex Club, and Madame Loyal, as well as in other cities across Europe and India.

Off the back of his new three-track ‘Democracy’ EP, we sat down with Victor to get all the details on the EP, vibes in Paris, and what’s next for him!

WWD: Hey Victor, great to meet you. How’s your day going?

Great to meet you too! I’m feeling really good — excited about releasing new music. It’s always a mix of joy and nerves when putting tracks out into the world, but I’m happy to finally share them.

WWD: Congratulations on releasing ‘Democracy.’ Can you talk us through the release?

Thank you! Democracy is a very personal project. I started working on it six months ago, after going to a concert — I was inspired by the freedom the artists showed on stage. Each track explores a different emotion or state of mind, from joy to doubt, through raw grooves and hypnotic loops..

I also wanted the release to come with strong visuals, so we shot a few short videos to go along with the music. The goal was to create an atmosphere that reflects both the energy and the weirdness of our time.

WWD: Where did you grow up and how did your environment shape your relationship with music?

I grew up in the suburbs of Paris with my family. They originally come from Normandy, where my grandmother used to live. We’d often drive there to visit her, and music was always a big part of those road trips — a mix of French chanson and rock.

Those car rides were also my first real exposure to electronic music. I vividly remember hearing ‘Alive’ 2007 by Daft Punk for the first time — it felt overwhelming and a bit intimidating at the time

Today, I’ve inherited some of my grandmother’s old vinyl records, and I sometimes sample them in my productions.

WWD: What’s the first memory you have of making music?

I was obsessed with drums — such a big instrument, making so much noise! I remember being around six years old, watching concert DVDs with my older brother and pretending to be the band. We’d bang on the couch with all our strength, we were rocking out.

Eventually, I started playing real drums and kept at it for five or six years, until we moved to a new place. That early obsession with rhythm definitely shaped the way I produce music today. For this EP, I even recorded Guillaume Demolder — the best drummer I know — to bring that raw, live energy into the tracks.

WWD: What’s the scene like in your city?

The house scene in Paris is wild — it had a real golden age about five years ago, and now it’s shifting back to a deeper focus on the music itself. That’s led to some truly beautiful events, like La Mona, Solarium, OHP, Planète House, and many others.

Even though fewer venues are centered around our kind of sound these days — which makes things a bit tougher for promoters and organizers — the quality of the music is getting stronger and stronger.

WWD: When you think back to your earliest projects, what’s something you would do differently now?

I’m really happy to be where I am today, and I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t done those first projects. It’s a journey that takes time, sometimes with wrong turns, but in the end, it’s the miles traveled that matter more than the destination.

WWD: Can you share some insight into your creative process when producing music? Do you have any particular rituals or methods that help you stay inspired?‍

I always start with drums and percussion. It’s all about the groove first, and sometimes it comes naturally — so I try to capture that energy right away. After that, the more detailed and sometimes tougher work begins, but with experience, it becomes more enjoyable.

When I get stuck, I often check out how artists I admire work. I look for one or two production tricks and use them as inspiration to unblock myself and keep going.

WWD: If you could play B2B with any DJ, who would it be and why?

There are quite a few! I’d be thrilled to play back-to-back with artists like D-stone, Mely, and Maison Blanche. I really admire their sound and energy, and I think our styles could blend well on the dancefloor.

WWD: When you are not busy with music, what might we find you doing?

You’d probably feel embarrassed if I told you.

WWD: Finally, what do you have coming up in the next few months? Feel free to mention anything!

Yes! A few videos are coming out with the EP — I had the chance to work with some amazing people: Gary Guénaire, Lucas Lebras, Mélanie Robert, and Camille Mangenot and Sebastien Erbani.

We shot some pretty absurd and slightly surreal scenes, somewhere between humor and the bizarre. You can already catch the first clips on my Instagram page!

WWD: Sounds amazing! Thanks for the chat 🙂
