Little Talk with HiFi Sean

HiFi Sean is one of those characters that if you don’t know him, you absolutely should! His career in music spans a few decades and a lot of massive musical achievements, like his place in the iconic band The Soup Dragons. A dynamic DJ and a well-versed producer, Sean brings the sunshine with his 24 carat gold track, ‘Waiting For The Sun.’ We had the pleasure of chatting with this musical maverick about all things latest EP, creative process, what’s next, and more!

WWD: We’d love to hear about the initial idea for ‘Waiting For The Sun.’ When did you first approach this concept and what was your original intention with this release?

I wanted to make the most positive, the most uplifting, the most euphoric track I could possibly muster. I was walking my dogs one morning and this nursery rhyme style phrase kept going round in my head and I rushed home and started to write it. Musically it has taken me a year on and off to get it where I want with all the right musicians and singers. I was in no rush as I just wanted to make for myself the perfect sounding record and basically just get what was in my head nailed.

It had to all be live instruments to start with and then I would take those sessions into the digital realm and start chopping them about and having this giant live played sample library so to speak and arrange the track all from that.

I worked on it on and off for over a year. It is how I work sometimes making a track and then leaving it and revisiting it. It sometimes gives me a clear view if it is as good as I remember it being and anything becomes apparent that needs to be focused on. I need to get that tingle inside when I hear something to know I am onto something good. No tingle…..no track.

WWD: What was most important for you to convey through this EP? Do you feel that you were able to accomplish all of your intentions?

Yes, I think I accomplished what I set out to do in my head. I had a dream to make a big euphoric celebratory record about something we all share called sunshine and I think I managed to do that. And let us be honest we need a track like this right now with the state of the World that we live in. Tracks where you want to ‘church clap’ along are always a winner in my books.

WWD: What are you most proud of with ‘Waiting For The Sun?’

I am most proud of the fact that when I hear it, I forget I made it. Anyone who shares this feeling will totally get what I am talking about. If you create something that you can step back and be the listener and enjoy the rush then you have succeeded in what you stepped out to achieve in the first place.

Some might see this as a summer record but for me it is more a song about hope and always knowing whatever is putting you in a dark place at that certain time that the next day can take a completely different turn and bring that light back into your world. It seeps that energy and emotion. Hope you enjoy it …I love it.

WWD: What was the most challenging part of bringing this release together?

Getting it out for summer as I sat on it for a while and then realized – oh shit I need to get this out in a few months to make summer.

WWD: This EP marks many years in this industry. Can you share some of your thoughts on how your creative / production process has changed and remained the same over the years? Do you approach anything differently from when you first began?

I think at heart I am still that 14 year old kid in my head with a cassette recorder and drum machine and a Roland SH101 synth making music to keep the demons at bay and just lose myself in it.

I honestly bloody love making music. It’s the part that comes after I have personal issues with but hey I ain’t going to let that nonsense stop the creation.

WWD: Is the feedback of others important to you? How do you use this in your process?

I take it on board, but it does not control what I do or how I think. I have been making records for years and I think I am good at that and writing songs. I just want it to never stop as it keeps me alive and it is what I practically live for.

WWD: What drives you to create music?

Hell knows! Does anyone who creates music know why they do it ? It comes naturally, I have always done it and I always will. It’s in my bones and it’s in my soul. If you are not creating music for the love it then seriously check yourself OUT.

WWD: Who do you think is blazing a trail right now?

Likely to be someone who is very good at working social media.

WWD: Where do you find the most inspiration when it comes to finding new music?

I have my sources and I like randomly discovering something that sends me down a winding road of discovering other things.  It is always nice to hear how people discovered me and how it brings them into my world and then they discover other people close to me in my circle. I suppose that is the one beauty of the digital world we live in.

WWD: What’s in the pipeline next for HiFi Sean?

More journeys into my music meandering. I am not really a careerist so I don’t sit with a spreadsheet working out my Q1 / Q2 and all that nonsense. I do what I feel I should be doing at any specific time.

The excitement for me is that even I do not know where I am going next!

WWD: Exactly how it should be! Thanks for the chat 🙂
