Infinite Depth welcome back their good friend VNTM on the label. After three remixes it was time for this impressive EP, which contains the long-awaited title track ‘Occulent’ together with two other originals and two great remixes. The first remix comes from the acclaimed Italian duo Hunter/Game and the other one comes from the very talented and rising French artist Paul Roux.
The EP starts off with the title track ‘Occulent’, which could be seen as fast-paced melodic techno. A sound made signature by VNTM. The track has a driving and powerful lower end, accompanied by bright atmospheric elements. Throughout the arrangement, some emotional synthwork comes through, leading towards the moment where the track is all about that sharp synth.
In their interpretation of ‘Occulent’, Hunter/Game took that emotional part of the original track and spread it across their melodic focused remix, which makes the track more dreamy and mystical. It feels like you are drifting in between the elements of the original. On the other hand, the drums and percussion are giving a more propulsive feeling to the remix.
Next up is ‘Momentum’. This track gives the EP more depth and contains a lot of widespread repetitive details. The combination of these crispy details and atmospheric pads are creating a hypnotic environment, which gets more intense as new layers unfold themselves.
Paul Roux turned up the tempo in his remix of ‘Momentum’, but this doesn’t make the remix just a heavier version of the original. It’s the opposite, as a result of its soft kick, rhythmic percussion and astral soundscape. This composition is like a new world opening up right in front of you, guided by its sophisticated piano melody.
Contrary to Paul’s remix, the final track of the EP, titled ‘Rage Quit’, is representing the heavier side of the EP and has been a part of VNTM’s live-set for quite some time. It’s the most techno-orientated track with a long-stretched arrangement, created for non-stop movement of a crowd.
