Miss Melera has been a rising star of the Dutch scene in recent years. The melodic maestro has graced the likes of Einmusika, Warung Recordings and Natura Sonoris with her deftly crafted sound and regularly rocked dance-floors at home and abroad. This month, the Colourizon chief celebrates the 100th instalment of her revered podcast. We caught up with her on the journey so far, her pandemic experience and lots more. It’s all below!
WWD: Miss Melera, thanks for joining us! Where in the world are you at the moment?
At home in cold and rainy Amsterdam ; )
WWD: You’ve just reached 100 episodes of the Colourizon podcast. How would you describe the feeling?
I started with this monthly show at Proton USA – 8 years ago. To reach 100 episodes is a milestone and of course I’m proud of it. I’m still making every podcast with a lot of joy and dedication. It’s part of my life since then.
WWD: How has your approach to the podcast evolved over the journey from 001 to 100?
Music is always evolving and of course it changed if you start listening from the first episode. But melodies are the key for Colourizon and with no doubt most important.
WWD: How do you see the Colourizon events developing over the years to come?
I’ve been always dreaming to bring Colourizon overseas. Which would have happened in 2020, but due known worldwide problems, this was unfortunately not possible. I’ve done lots of amazing events in my hometown Amsterdam but can’t wait to expand the horizon. When the world opens up again, Canada, US and South America are on my bucket list!
WWD: 2020 was an immensely tough year for artists and the music industry. Have there been any important takeaways for you?
Friends, family and their ongoing support has been one of the most important things to get me through this tough and challenging period. I’m trying to keep myself moving with other creative activities which I’ve learned during my studies. It makes me more satisfied to do something instead of being home for a while now with barely anything happening event wise. One thing is clearly sure, I miss it so much that I’ve made the right decision to go further with my passion for music and can’t wait to go back to this life.
WWD: What’s one goal you have set for yourself in 2021?
Because of the current situation it’s more difficult to dream, or even think about “normal” gigs and touring the world. I can only hope for better times and I’ve my fingers crossed every day to do again what I love most. I’ll find it not easy to make new goals in times like this. I’ll keep on working to spend more time in the studio for new releases.
WWD: How have you been spending the down time throughout the pandemic?
To be honest, in the beginning I was only staring from my couch and couldn’t believe this was really happening. Of course, I could not stay on my couch, so I started with small projects, trying to keep myself busy, not only with music, to keep on moving and to feel satisfied after a day. My happy days are creative and now full of new ideas. Love to work on my own designs for upcoming new projects, something I did not had much time before but now I have.
Also, I’ve seen my friends and family much more which is the best thing what could happened for me.
WWD: What artists and labels have you been listening to over the last few months?
Wurtz & Iberian Muse are bringing amazing sounds, also Alex Preda is a favorite producer with his latest releases. Last Siamese compilation is great too. Marino Canal and Yotto are outstanding.
WWD: Do you have any exciting projects coming up in the new year?
