David Orin is a new name for most but one that will instantly carry weight once his delectable ‘Antemeridian’ reaches your ears. The track (listen below) features as the debut cut from newly founded Canadian imprint Saisons, the Montreal-based record label founded by Kora and friends. It’s a synth-laden beauty with yet a natural edge, an entrancing story to tell. We have the chance to catch up with the US artist this week as he takes on the mantle of the Prima Lux series, delivering a sumptuous ninety minute set for WWD readers. Make the introduction below!

WWD : Thanks for joining us David. ‘Antemeridian’ is a beautiful cut.  Can you share with us a little insight into the creative process behind the track?

Thanks so much for having me! Last year I didn’t attend Burning Man and the majority of my close friends went. It was late on Burn night and I having serious FOMO and decided to write music. The majority of Antemeridian happened in this one session. As the sun was coming up the next morning, I was just finishing and decided to name the track about how I was feeling.

WWD : Do you have a set routine in the studio?

Before any studio session, I’ll turn off all my lights and meditate, letting the world fall away. I write my best music with a clear mind.

I typically jam for hours, sometimes days, before I begin to form a track. I record everything that I do to audio and try not to lose anything as little bits of magic happen sometimes without warning.

Sometimes, I’ll start with drums and build melodies from there. Sometimes the reverse. Just depends on where my head is.

WWD : As an emerging artist, what do you find to be the biggest challenge in the industry?

The biggest challenge, for me, is the over saturation of music. While I love how much music there is, it’s a challenge to really break through the thousands of tracks released each week.

WWD : Who are the emerging artists on your radar right now?

Kora, Jon Charnis, Sam Jasperson, Adrien from Montreal, Kevin Di Serna, and Colle are all amazing talents!

Do you have any particular goals you’d love to achieve before the end of the year?

Sam Jasperson and I have been working on an EP which is just brilliant so far. The goal is to put the finishing touches on it and share it with the world.

Tell us a little more about the mix you have made for us!

I wanted to put something together that continuously built over the course of the listen. Using some of my favorite music new and older!

To wrap up, what are your plans for the rest of 2018?

I am moving to Brooklyn next month so, my main goal is to get settled, set up my studio space, and finish a few projects before the end of the year.
